I’ve been playing around with cover art options. First up are the ones that are already in use:
The next set are an attempt at some more ‘modern’ looking covers.
Finally, here is the new cover I’ve been toying around with for Old Dark Things. I could produce covers like this for the Winter King series, or I could produce a cover like the ones I have for the series for Old Dark Things.
For anyone who is interested:
- The first three were mostly done by scanning pencil sketches and colouring in Photoshop. Background images were used to achieve a ‘stone/ice’ texture, and Obsidian Dawn brushes provide the Celtic motifs.
- The second three were mostly done in Affinity Photo (which I now vastly prefer to photoshop… you don’t have to pay an ongoing fee, and frankly Affinity Photo is just a better, more intuitive, less bloated program in every way).
- Stock art has mostly come from Pexels. I need to look into the rights more carefully, but I believe from what I’ve read that Pexels stock art is usable with credit on an ebook cover. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.
Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions.
Honestly, I like the ‘charm’ of the older covers. In my opinion, to the extent that you can judge a book by its cover, the older covers seem truer to the books, with their illustrations of creatures and symbols. They may not be as ‘modern,’ but the uniqueness is a good thing, to my mind at least.
Thanks. I think that’s pretty much in line with the general feeling. I’ll likely be sticking with the current covers or modifying them slightly rather than starting over from scratch with new covers.
